Gio Reyna, Matt Turner, Brenden Aaronson reportedly make USMNT World Cup roster; Diego Luna misses cut

The United States men’s national team roster for the World Cup will be officially revealed Tuesday, but fans are getting an early glimpse of some of the players who will wear the stars and stripes this summer.

The Athletic’s Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio reported Friday about five players who had been told that they made the final USMNT roster, and two who did not. Per The Athletic, all players were informed Friday if they made head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s final squad for the World Cup.

The five players who made the roster include: Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Gio Reyna, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson, Toulouse defender Mark McKenzie and New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner, per The Athletic.

The two who did not make the roster are Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna and RSL forward Zavier Gozo.

One of the most notable selections is Reyna, a talented but polarizing figure who has made only four USMNT appearances since the Copa América in the summer of 2024. Reyna is flexible position-wise — a big benefit on a limited tournament roster — but has had injury troubles and was tied up in controversy related to his parents and former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter.

Sebastian Berhalter, the son of Gregg Berhalter, is also reportedly on the roster after continuing to impress Pochettino; the midfielder has become a consistent part of the rotation after earning his first U.S. call-up in 2025.

Another notable selection is Turner, who was the first-string keeper for the U.S. at the 2022 World Cup but has since slipped out of favor. Turner has made only two starts for the U.S. since 2024, with Pochettino instead turning to New York City FC’s Matt Freese in the starting role. It seems likely that Freese will be the GK1 heading into this summer, but for now it appears Turner will be on the roster after all — which was far from a guarantee.

The exclusions of Luna and Gozo, meanwhile, are also notable for different reasons. Luna, a 22-year-old midfielder and winger, has received several call-ups from Pochettino over the past year, making him a surprising snub.

The 19-year-old Gozo, meanwhile, is one of the most exciting young prospects in MLS and seems destined for a bright future in Europe. Gozo has represented the U.S. at nearly every youth level, and it seems likely that his time will be coming in the future.

The USMNT’s roster announcement Tuesday is not as official as it might seem: Final rosters for the World Cup must be submitted by June 1, at which point they will be officially locked in. That means players like Luna and Gozo, who have just missed the cut, may still be added to the roster before that deadline.

After that date, players can be replaced on the roster only due to injury or illness, per FIFA rules.
