The countdown to the 2026 World Cup is on! Each day ahead of the tournament’s return to North America, Yahoo Sports will highlight an insight or moment that showcases just how grand the world’s biggest sporting spectacle has become — even beyond the expanded field of this year’s global event.

As a tournament, the World Cup has changed a lot over the years, but there has always been one constant: Brazil.

Of the dozens of countries that have qualified for the World Cup since 1930, only one country has made it every single time. Eight different nations have lifted the trophy, but only one has done it five times.

That would be Brazil, for both stats. The Seleção have had indisputable success at the global tournament, making it to every World Cup since the first in 1930 and winning it all across five different decades (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002).

Next on the list after Brazil is Germany, which has an impressive résumé of its own. The Germans have won the World Cup title four times, and have the most first-, second- and third-place finishes in total (12). They’ve made the tournament nearly every time, except for two appearances in the 1950s. (FIFA includes the wins of West Germany as part of Germany’s history).

Italy has also lifted the trophy four times, but the team’s recent struggles have led to the Azzurri missing three World Cups in a row. Meanwhile, Mexico has made it to the tournament as many times as Italy (18), but has never advanced past the quarterfinals.

France and Argentina have had the most recent success, adding their recent titles to historic ones from the previous century. This tournament could be anyone’s to win, though the odds appear in the favor of one of these seven previous winners.
