World Cup 2026: How yellow and red cards during the group stage affect tiebreakers

As Matchday 3 of the 2026 World Cup gets underway, there are still a number of places up for grabs in the Round of 32. Over the next several days teams will be playing their third and final group stage matches. There will likely be ties in individual groups, meaning that tiebreakers will need to be consulted in order to determine who gets a better seed in the knockout stage and who might be going home early.

One aspect of the tiebreakers to determine group stage places, as well as the best eight third-place teams that will be advancing, is the number of yellow and red cards accumulated over three matches by players and coaches. FIFA has dubbed this Team Conduct Score (TCS) and it could make or break a team’s future in the competition.

Yellow card: minus-1 point
Two yellow cards (equaling a red): minus-3 points
Straight red card: minus-4 points
Yellow card plus straight red card: minus-5 points

Should two or more teams in the same group finish equal on points TCS would only come into play if six other criteria do not resolve the tie.

From FIFA:

Step One: greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned; superior goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned; greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned

Step Two: superior goal difference in all group matches; greatest number of goals scored in all group matches; highest team conduct score (players and team officials) relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained

The only other occasion when TCS would be needed in a tie-breaking situation would be to determine the best eight third-place teams.

greatest number of points obtained in all group matches; goal difference resulting from all group matches; greatest number of goals scored in all group matches; highest team conduct score (players and team officials) relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained in all group matches

As of Wednesday, South Africa (-12), Qatar (-11), Paraguay (-11), Bosnia and Herzegovina (-9), and Belgium (-7) sport the worst TCS after Matchday 2. Each of those teams remain hopeful of securing a knockout round place, but the cumulation of yellow and red cards for each side could have a negative effect on their chances of getting out of the group stage.
