2026 World Cup: Iran falls 1 spot short of knockout round after wild Algeria-Austria finish

One day after a heartbreaking draw threatened to end Iran‘s World Cup run, Algeria and Austria delivered the final blow.

As the third-place finisher in Group G, the Iranian national team needed losses from Croatia, DR Congo and either Algeria or Austria in order to claim one of the final third-place knockout slots. Eight of the 12 third-place finishers advance to the Round of 32 as part of the expanded tournament.

Instead, Croatia beat Ghana, which had already secured its spot; DR Congo rolled to a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan to advance. That left Team Melli’s fate up to Algeria and Austria in the Group J slate.

For about two minutes, it seemed like Iran would sneak its way in: Algeria scored a late go-ahead goal in the third minute of stoppage time, eliminating Austria from the tournament if things stood. But Austria rallied back minutes later, with Sasa Kalajdzic tying things back up with one of the last touches of the game.

Algeria’s four points put it third-to-last in the third-place standings. Senegal, which had a better goal differential than Iran, ended in the final third-place spot instead, becoming the only team with three points to advance to the next round.

This is Iran’s sixth appearance at the World Cup; it has never made it past the group stage.

The road for Iran up to this point has been a particularly tough one. Beyond the slew of non-soccer issues that have come with playing in a country that is waging war against their own, Iran has also had tough luck on the pitch.

All three of Team Melli’s group stage games have ended in draws: After tying 2-2 with New Zealand, Iran ended with a 0-0 draw to a 10-man Belgium, with Iran’s first-half goal disallowed due to VAR. A 1-1 draw with Egypt — with a missed penalty, two shots off the post and a stoppage time goal that was a toe offsides, called back after Team Melli had already celebrated — secured Iran’s third-place finish in Group G.

After Friday’s game, Iranian defender Ramin Rezaeian was dejected over the narrow draws, speaking to reporters while holding his Player of the Match trophy for scoring Iran’s sole goal.

“I’m tired,” Rezaeian told reporters. “I don’t know what’s going wrong with our football because I can’t see any luck to my team, because we deserved to win the game.”

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi, though, said that he was proud of what the team had accomplished regardless of the outcome.

“We are here to make our history true,” Taremi said. “Tomorrow, if our dream becomes true, thank God. If not, I think we are proud of our game, our players, because of how we did the games, last three games, we are proud of. So yeah, let’s see what happens.”

Unfortunately for Iran, that World Cup journey now comes to a brutally early end.
