In a World Cup defined by close matches and huge upsets, Cape Verde has emerged as one of the best stories at the event. But that story took an unfortunate turn Tuesday, as it was reported the team’s captain, Ryan Mendes, is under investigation for an alleged rape, per The Athletic.

Mendes was accused of raping a “FIFA-mandated team support worker” after a March game against Chile in the FIFA Series in New Zealand, per The New Zealand Herald. Hours after that game — a 4-2 win by Chile — Mendes allegedly forced his way into the woman’s hotel room and raped her, per multiple reports.

The alleged incident was reported to a Cape Verde official the following day. While Mendes is reportedly under investigation, he has not been charged with a crime yet.

The alleged rape was reported by The Athletic in May, though the identity of the player allegedly involved was not known at the time. The New Zealand Herald was the first to name Mendes. The publication said it uncovered that information though “extensive correspondence and documentation relating to the case.”

FIFA was allegedly aware of the identity of the player for weeks. When contacted about the situation by The Athletic, FIFA said it takes all allegations of misconduct “extremely seriously.” It did not mention Mendes by name in its statement, though did confirm it was in contact with New Zealand authorities.

“FIFA takes any allegation of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process in place for anyone in football who wants to report an incident.”

Police confirmed an investigation was underway when reached by the New Zealand Herald, but did not comment further. The Cape Verde federation, Mendes’ manager and agent have not answered questions regarding the allegations, per the New Zealand Herald.

Mendes, 36, is among the most decorated members of Cape Verde’s squad. Over his career, Mendes has 100 caps, holds the team’s appearance record and has scored the most goals in team history.

When Cape Verde named its 2026 World Cup roster in May, Mendes was named the team’s captain.

In addition to playing for the national team, Mendes has played professionally in Ligue 1, Süper Lig and UAE Pro League. He spent last season with Iğdır F.K., a Turkish club.

Mendes has seen significant playing time in all three of Cape Verde’s games at the 2026 World Cup. In their first World Cup, Cape Verde has emerged as perhaps the event’s biggest Cinderella story after the team played Spain to a 0-0 draw in its first World Cup game.

Cape Verde then played Uruguay to a 2-2 draw and Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw to advance to the Round of 32.

Cape Verde is set to play its next match Friday against Argentina. Barring a change in his status, Mendes is expected to play in that contest.
