Both sides are seeking their first-ever World Cup knockout stage win and a likely Round of 16 meeting against Argentina. Both also finished second in their respective groups. The Pharaohs will be led by Mohamed Salah, who exited their 1-1 draw with Iran with a hamstring strain. He is expected to be ready for Australia, which is important considering only Belgium‘s Leandro Trossard has created more opportunities than Salah (11) this World Cup.

Australia has proven to be a difficult defensive side to break down having allowed only two goals in its three group stage matches. Offensively, it’s been a challenge having taken only 26 shots, second-lowest in the tournament. The Socceroos have not scored since the 75th minute of their 2-0 win over Türkiye in their opening match on June 13.

Argentina vs. Cape Verde

Friday, July 3 | 6 p.m. ET | Miami | TV: Fox

Odds: Argentina -2000, Cape Verde +1100

One of the tournament’s Cinderellas faces one of the tournament’s favorites and arguably the greatest player of all time.

It’s been a memorable World Cup ride for Cape Verde, which qualified for the Round of 32 after tying their three group stage matches, including a scoreless draw with Spain in their opener. Now comes another challenge against Lionel Messi and the reigning world champions.

Sharks goalkeeper Vozinha will be busy dealing with an Argentine attack that features Golden Boot contender Messi (six goals) among its weapons. Cape Verde has shown a strong defense having allowed only two goals, but they will be tested.
