World Cup 2026: Julian Nagelsmann out as Germany manager as Jürgen Klopp emerges as replacement

Julian Nagelsmann’s time as Germany’s men’s national team manager is over following the team’s loss to Paraguay after penalty kicks during the World Cup Round of 32. The German Football Association (GFA) is working quick to find a replacement and have already initiated discussions with former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp.

“The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023. He is characterized by a high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition,” said GFA president Bernd Neuendorf said in a statement.

“Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp . He has already signaled his general willingness to take on the position.”

The 59-year-old Klopp has never managed an international side. He most recently led Liverpool for nine seasons, helping the Reds capture titles in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Club World Cup and Champions League.

Since departing Liverpool following the 2023-24 season, Klopp has served as the Head of Global Football of Red Bull. His four-year contract reportedly contains an out clause allowing him to leave for the Germany job.

The 38-year-old Nagelsmann was hired in 2023. During his first tournament, host Germany reached the quarterfinals and finished fifth at Euro 2024.

He received a pair of contract extensions — one after Euro 2024 and one in January 2025 that runs through the end of Euro 2028. Germany also reached the 2025 UEFA Nations League semifinals. At the 2026 World Cup, Germany won its group, but suffered its first defeat in a World Cup penalty shootout since the 1976 Euros.

Nagelsmann originally said he would not resign after the loss, but on Friday said the players deserve a “fresh start.”

“My top priority has always been the team’s success,” he said in a statement. “After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.

“I want to thank my coaching staff, the support team, and everyone at the federation who supported us, especially the players with whom I had the privilege of working. A special thank you also goes to the fans. You carried us, you trusted us, you gave us energy, even during difficult times.

“It truly pains me that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more memorable nights of football at this World Cup. You deserved so much more!”

If Klopp gets the job, his first big test will be qualifying for Euro 2028, which begins in March 2027.
