Getting an IUD was the best decision for my sex life

If you’d told me three years ago that I’d willingly book an appointment to have something inserted into my uterus…

I would’ve blocked you.

As a sharp babe who’s sexually active, I had tried the pill. But between Lagos traffic, work deadlines, and my chaotic schedule, remembering to take it at the same time every day? Please. Some days I’d remember at 3pm, other days at 10pm, and some days? I’d forget entirely. My body was confused and I was all over the place.

Then my friend told me about the IUD. “Just insert it and forget it,” she said.

I was sceptical. “Won’t it hurt?” “Won’t my boyfriend feel it?” “Isn’t it for women who already have children?” All the myths we’ve been fed. The internet had already convinced me it was going to be the worst experience of my life. Painful and all that “good” stuff. So naturally… I panicked.

I watched every TikTok. Read every thread. Listened to every “my cousin’s friend’s neighbour” story.

Then, I did what was most important at the time. I researched trusted healthcare sources. And I came across your-life.com, where I learnt about my contraceptive options and even chatted with the YOURLA chatbot, which gave me more intricate guidance and contact recommendations close to me.

By the time my appointment came around, something unexpected happened.

Nobody rushed me. Nobody pressured me.

The nurse smiled and asked, “So… what would you like to know?” For the first time, I realised contraception wasn’t about convincing me. It was about informing me.

We talked through the different methods. The pros. The possible side effects. What suited my lifestyle. What didn’t. By the end of the consultation, I wasn’t choosing from fear. I was choosing from knowledge.

And honestly? The procedure itself was nowhere near the horror story I’d imagined.

Best decision I ever made

My sex life transformed. No more anxiety. No more counting days. No more “let me just check if I’m late.” Just pure, uninterrupted intimacy with my partner. Our connection actually got better because I was finally present instead of spiralling.

Turns out, it’s easier to enjoy intimacy when your brain isn’t busy calculating due dates.

Looking back, I can’t believe how many myths I believed simply because nobody had explained the facts. I wish I’d asked questions sooner. I wish I’d trusted experts before trusting comment sections.

If you’re curious about IUDs or any other contraceptive method, start with information, not assumptions. Because confidence starts with knowing your options.
