Retailers tend to use sale holidays as an excuse to clear out old stock, but Google cut prices on some of its brand-new hardware for Black Friday this year—like its Pixel 5 phone and Nest Audio speaker that just launched last month. If you’ve been meaning to piece together a smart-home setup or upgrade your old phone, these are good deals on products we like.

Google Pixel 5
Photograph: GoogleNow is the time to upgrade your Pixel, since all the latest models were recently released. Both the high-end Pixel 5 and the cheaper but still excellent Pixel 4A are on sale. The Stadia gaming system is discounted as well.
Google Pixel 5 for $650 ($50 off)
You can get a deal on the brand-new Pixel 5 if you can put up with some fine print. The $100 discount is if you activate it at the point of sale on Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint—although if you open a new line on Sprint then you get $200 off. If you decide to activate it later, then you can still get it for $650 ($50 off), just as you can if you buy it on Amazon. WIRED senior associate reviews editor Julian Chokkattu called this the best Pixel yet.
Google Pixel 4A for $300 ($50 off)

The Pixel 4A is a good deal if you want a solid phone, don’t care (yet) about 5G network compatibility, and aren’t in need of the Pixel 5’s higher-end specs. In short, it’s all the phone you really need, and that’s why WIRED’s smartphone reviewer extraordinaire Julian Chokkattu gave it a coveted 9/10 in his review. Like with the Pixel 5 deal, you have to activate the phone at the time of purchase on Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint, and Sprint will also give you a total of $150 off if you open a new line.
Stadia Premiere Edition—Game Streaming—for $70 ($30 off)
WIRED’s Jess Grey was lukewarm about the Stadia when it launched last year. But despite its drawbacks, she still recommends it as being a way cheaper path into console gaming than buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. Faster-paced games tend to suffer from lag, but she found the gameplay of slower-paced titles was pretty good.
Smart Speaker Deals
Nest Hub Max
Photograph: Best BuyGoogle-enabled smart speakers and displays act as hubs to give smart devices a way to communicate with each other. Whether you choose a command center with a screen or just a speaker, having a hub (or several) to tie the rest of your devices together makes all of them run a lot more smoothly.
Nest Mini for $19 ($30 off)
You don’t need a screen in every room, but Nest Minis add a way for the Nest system (they all link together) to hear and respond to you when you’re away from your main hub. As WIRED’s Scott Gilberston noted in his review, don’t expect stellar sound quality for playing music. It’s a speaker designed to communicate with you, not substitute for a Sonos.
JBL Link Portable Google Speaker for $90 ($90 off)
The Link Portable is the best Google Assistant-enabled speaker that you can move from room to room, dock, or use as a Bluetooth speaker out of the house. It gets about 8 hours of battery on a charge and can take commands as well as any Google speaker, though it doesn’t have as accurate a microphone array for listening as many of the stationary speakers, so it will occasionally miss a command if you don’t speak up.
Nest Hub for $50 ($40 off)
The Nest Hub lacks a security camera, and its speaker is nothing to write home about, but if you’re building out a smart home with stand-alone security cameras and speakers—which is the best way of doing it—there’s little need to pay extra for a hub with these features built in. I’ve been using one for six months, and its 7-inch screen is more than enough to view from across my apartment. Walmart’s deal includes a $20 Vudu credit for watching television shows and movies on its streaming channel.
Nest Hub Max for $180 ($50 off)

The Hub Max isn’t perfect. When I reviewed it, I noted that its camera’s lack of night vision made it a poor choice for a security camera, but the Max’s 10-inch touchscreen and better speakers give it a leg up on its smaller 7-inch-screen Nest Hub, especially if you’ll be gazing at it across a large room.
Lenovo Smart Display for $60 ($40 off)
Lenovo makes smart displays to rival Google’s own Nest Hub devices, and they pack the same Google Assistant along with what I (subjectively) feel is a more attractive design. WIRED reviews editor Jeffrey Van Camp gave it an 8/10, WIRED Recommends score and praised its ability to work with most Google-compatible devices and apps. Unlike the similarly priced Nest Hub, it comes with a built-in cam. If you want that in a Google-brand display, you’d have to step up to the $230 Net Hub Max.
Lenovo Smart Clock for $35 ($45 off)
This is a very small smart display—too small for watching video. But it is good at displaying photos, the weather, and showing the time, which is why it made our list of great Google Assistant devices. Read our full review to learn more about it (7/10, WIRED Recommends).
Google Home Max Party Speaker for $150 ($150 off)

It’s showing its age by now at three years old, but at this price, the Home Max is still a good option if you want a smart speaker with relatively good audio quality but have no need for a screen. WIRED senior editor Michael Calore said the Home Max sounded fantastic when he reviewed it in 2017, and if you already use Google Assistant as your AI voice of choice on your phone, then it integrates especially well with your smart home flow.

The best smart home devices provide peace of mind, whether it’s bolstering security or automatically adjusting your home’s HVAC to save you money. Who would have thought eventually you could keep tabs on your home even when you’re hundreds or thousands of miles away?
Nest Wi-Fi Router for $139 ($30 off)
If you’re neck-deep in the Google Assistant ecosystem and want something that’ll play easily with your Google-centric smart home system, WIRED’s Scott Gilberston says the Nest Wi-Fi is for you. It only has one Ethernet port, and it doesn’t support the faster, future Wi-Fi 6 (though not many devices support Wi-Fi 6 yet). The Nest Wi-Fi Router’s strength is not in premium specs for heavy-user enthusiasts, but in its simplicity for the masses.
Nest Learning Thermostat for $199 ($50 off)
You can adjust your home’s temperature from anywhere (like from bed—no judgment) through the Nest app, and also set schedules so that you’re not overheating your home when nobody’s there. After a couple of days, it’ll start to create a schedule based on your heating and cooling preferences. It will figure out that you wake up around a certain time and like the heat to kick into higher gear, for example, or that you like a particular temperature setting at night. After a week, it’ll have a pretty good idea of when you’re home and not home on each day of the week, and it’ll lower the heating or cooling to save money when you’re out.

Sometimes size matters, like when it comes to speakers. The Nest Audio is a good choice to supplement a Nest smart home hub in a different room if you want better sound quality than you can get from a little Nest Mini puck. The Nest Audio scored an 8/10 when WIRED writer Parker Hall reviewed it last week, and he said pairing two together creates one of the best-sounding $200 stereos you can buy.
