Gio Reyna hit by bottle during goal celebration in CONCACAF Nations League championship win

Christian Pulisic drilled a penalty kick to put the United States up 3-2 late in extra time on Sunday night in the CONCACAF Nations League final against Mexico, which sparked a massive celebration on the field.

That, however, resulted in forward Gio Reyna getting hit in the head by a bottle down on the field.

The 18-year-old, who scored earlier in the game at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium in Denver, was hit by a bottle or a can from fans up in the stands.

Reyna, the CBS replay showed, was hit directly on the side of the head by a projectile as the USMNT celebration started dying down. He was left down on the ground for some time as medical staff tended to him before they finally left the field.

It’s unclear what exactly was thrown at Reyna or who threw it.

Reyna scored in the 26th minute off of a corner kick from Pulisic, which drew the USMNT level at 1-1.

Fans in the same section started throwing more projectiles later in the match, too — one of which actually hit a Mexican player right in the head after a shoving match broke out.

There have been several notable fan incidents at sporting events in recent weeks, especially in the NBA.

Fans at a Utah Jazz playoff game in Salt Lake City started heckling Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant’s family. A fan in Boston threw a bottle at Brooklyn guard Kyrie Irving’s head, and was actually charged with felony. Wizards star Russell Westbrook had popcorn dumped on his head walking into a tunnel, and a fan even sprinted out onto the court during a Wizards game. A Knicks fan spit on Trae Young, too.

All of the fans in question were banned from the respective arenas indefinitely.

One fan even ran behind the set of the CBS Sports desk and dove over a railing in the middle of their broadcast on Sunday night in Denver, too, leaving the announcing crew and a security guard baffled.

The United States held on to beat Mexico 3-2 to win the inaugural edition of the Nations League.
