Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State, management clarified that the individual allegedly killed by a trigger-happy policeman is not affiliated with the university as a student.

SaharaReporters reported on Tuesday that the Oyo State chapter of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) Campus Monitoring Committee (CMC) declared a shutdown of academic activities at the LAUTECH Ogbomoso, over the killing by a policeman.

The union in a statement issued by its chairman, Michael Oladipupo, had condemned what it described as “the appalling and senseless murder of one of our esteemed students at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso at the hands of members of the Nigerian Police Force.”

SaharaReporters had earlier on Tuesday reported that LAUTECH located in the Ogbomoso area of Oyo State was thrown into chaos after a policeman on Monday shot a student dead and injured two others.

The unfortunate incident it was reported occurred when the police officer was called to settle a misunderstanding between two people in the school, but rather than settle the matter, he shot sporadically into the air and in the process, shot the student dead and injured two others.

Sequel to that students took to street in protest demanding justice for the victims.

However, reacting to the unfortunate incident, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lekan Fadeyi, condemned the killing, but said the victim was not a student of the institution.

Noting that the incident did not happen within the institution, Fadeyi said “According to what we had, the incident occurred around 2am, it did not occur in the institution, it happened in a club and in LAUTECH we don’t have a club or hotel.”

He added, “They were fighting and the student who got killed is not our student. So, what happened had nothing to do with LAUTECH. It has nothing to do with our convocation.

“Information from town was that some people got engaged at a nightclub, far from the university premises, during which one of them got killed,”

he said.
