MacBooks have taken most of the spotlight away from Mac desktops in recent years. Now that mobile performance and battery life have improved so much, there’s less of a reason to buy a desktop that chains you to your office.
But Mac desktops are getting a resurgence. The Mac Mini and Mac Studio were finally refreshed with brand-new chips and a newfound focus on running local AI. But which one should you buy? And where does the iMac land these days? I’ve been testing Macs for over a decade and have tested all these Mac desktops, so I can recommend what’s right for you.

The Best for Everyone: Mac Mini
Apple’s lovable mini PC was just upgraded with the M6 chip, and it’s a big deal on a couple of fronts. Before the refresh, these little computers were sold out for months, and it has AI to thank.
The Mac Mini isn’t the ultracheap mini PC it used to be. It’s $300 more than in the past, but the base model now has higher specs and a focus on running local AI. If you want a truly affordable little desktop PC for occasional use, you’ll have to opt for a Windows machine. The good news is that the Mac Mini remains a compelling offer across its configurations. You can choose between two new models: one with the M6 and one with the M5 Pro. The M6 model is the one most people should buy, especially if you’re looking for a fast, reliable Mac desktop.
The new M6 chip is especially fast in terms of GPU performance, an area Apple continues to make strides. If you’re a fledgling video editor or designer, the base configuration packs plenty of performance for creative applications. Unfortunately, it’s only a couple hundred bucks cheaper than a similarly configured MacBook Air, which makes the buying decision frustrating given how much more versatile a laptop is. But for the first time, the Mac Mini’s form factor is a benefit over a laptop. AI enthusiasts get excited about the prospect of an always-on, agentic AI box that sits on their desk and can then be controlled remotely from a MacBook or iPhone. That’s exactly what the Mac Mini can do (just be sure to upgrade the memory). And given memory prices across the industry, you won’t find many comparable options on Windows or Linux—at least not with this much performance and RAM.
I haven’t tested the M5 Pro model yet, but the main difference is in the enhanced graphics. Despite the improvements I mentioned on the M6, you can configure the M5 Pro up to 20 GPU cores, which really come in handy for tasks like gaming, 3D modeling, and video rendering. As the name suggests, I wouldn’t consider the pricier M5 Pro config unless you’re a professional who sits in front of Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve all day. If you’re more of a hobbyist or dabbler, the M6 will likely do you just fine.
Shipping times on the M6 Mac Mini have improved to the point where you can buy one and pick it up today from an Apple Store. The M5 Pro models, however, may take up to four weeks to ship.
Only for Pros: Mac Studio
Like with the Mac Mini, there are really two distinct versions of the Mac Studio. The base configuration comes with an M5 Max (the same chip in the MacBook Pro), sporting some really impressive GPU performance in particular. And that’s the main thing to consider when deciding between the M5 Pro Mac Mini and the M5 Max Mac Studio. Like choosing between those two chips in a MacBook Pro, the main upgrade is in graphics performance. Going with the M5 Max also lets you configure it with up to 128 GB of unified memory, which matters if you plan to run heavy local AI models. On the other hand, this puts you over the $5,000 price point rather quickly.
And then, there’s the M5 Ultra. This massive chip is literally two M5 Max dies stitched together, and to my surprise while testing, it sometimes resulted in double the performance, such as in GPU performance. But look, don’t even bother considering this unless you know exactly what you intend to use it for. Just so you know what you’re getting into, the model I tested had 256 GB of memory and cost over $11,000. You read that right. It’s definitely the most expensive computer I’ve ever had on my desk.
But I downloaded and started running on the M5 Ultra some of the largest and most powerful AI models I could find, and soon enough I had a foundation-tier LLM running completely on-device—no cloud needed. That means direct access to your computer for a powerful agentic AI to run wild with, all without the privacy and security concerns. Some simple agentic tests I ran on the M5 Ultra took minutes, whereas it took five times as long on my M5 Max MacBook Pro.

And while this thing is clearly not intended for gaming, I was pretty blown away by how fast games like Cyberpunk 2077 ran. I’ve definitely never seen games play this smoothly on a Mac before.
Unfortunately, shipping times on the Mac Studio are still dicey. If you want anything with 128 GB or more of memory, you’ll be waiting up to a month and a half for the M5 Max models. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio, meanwhile, will take up to four months to ship at this point.
Don’t Buy the iMac Right Now
The iMac has been downplayed in recent years. The once-iconic all-in-one computer, which comes with the display, stand, and accessories, used to be an affordable go-to choice for students, families, businesses, and even content creators. But as Apple has shifted focus, the iMac seems less and less of a focus, with sporadic updates over the years. It hasn’t been updated since 2024 and still uses the M4 chip.
It’s not a bad computer, though. The screen is brilliant, and the performance is solid, even by today’s standards. Its age, however, isn’t reflected in the price you’d pay right now: $1,499 gets you 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, the M4 chip with an eight-core GPU, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a 4.5K IPS display. A second M4 model with a 10-core GPU and four Thunderbolt 4 ports starts at $1,699. (Like nearly all Apple products, the iMac got a price increase.)
The main issue for me is that there’s currently only a 23.5-inch model, which is smaller than what most people will probably want. Until Apple releases a 27-inch model (as it has in the past), perhaps with an option for a “Pro” M-series chip, I can’t see the iMac as a good choice for most people. The simplicity will be a draw, especially if researching and buying a separate monitor and peripherals sounds daunting.
Interestingly, it is also the only desktop-size Mac monitor that isn’t at least 5K (it’s 4.5K). So, while it’s cheaper than buying a Studio Display paired with a new Mac Mini, the iMac also locks you into a one-time purchase you can’t upgrade later. And as the focus on local AI only grows, I can’t imagine the iMac regaining the relevance or attention it once had. On the plus side, it’s the only Mac desktop available in seven colors.
At the very least, I hope it gets a refresh to the M6 in the next couple of months. It’ll have been long overdue! Either way, now’s not a good time to buy an iMac.
Why Is Everyone Buying a Mac Mini?
Before the launch of the M6 model, Mac Minis had been sold out for most of this year. Orders for Mac Studios were similarly backlogged for months before you could get one. The reason? Well, according to Apple on an earnings call, both computers are “amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools,” and that “customer adoption of that is happening faster than we expected.” In other words, they were caught off guard. AI frameworks released in 2026, such as OpenClaw, run best on a dedicated machine that never turns off and has lots of available RAM—such as a Mac Mini.
What Happened to the Mac Pro?
The last incarnation of the Mac Pro was one of Apple’s most short-lived Macs. The most recent design was relaunched in 2019, alongside the Pro Display XDR. When it was unveiled, it was an exciting reentrance for the Mac, focusing not only on Pro-level performance but also on upgradability. Unlike the current Mac Studio, the Mac Pro had modular components you could swap in and out—or upgrade. The design was much more akin to a traditional tower PC. For a company that had been moving in the opposite direction for so long, it was a breath of fresh air.
But it wasn’t meant to last, and it survived only a few upgrade cycles. With the advent of Apple silicon and the rapid scaling of these system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs, the Mac Pro’s focus on modularity made less and less sense. Apple didn’t officially discontinue the Mac Pro until March 2026, but by then it had been almost three years since the Mac Pro was last updated. The Mac Studio with the “Ultra” chips has since fully replaced the Mac Pro.
M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max, or M5 Ultra?
Both the Mac Mini and Mac Studio have two configurations to choose from, which gives a clean delineation between the two in terms of performance. When you move from the base chip to the Pro and Max chips, the main differences are GPU cores and, in some cases, the maximum amount of RAM you can upgrade to. Certain applications and tasks benefit greatly from stronger GPU performance, speeding up things like video rendering, 3D modeling, gaming, and AI inferencing. These are the same chips that are available in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
The jump between the Max and Ultra chips, however, is much more significant. This is where you enter performance territory not possible on a MacBook. It has twice the CPU and GPU cores of the standard Max chips, delivers far stronger performance, and lets you configure it with up to 512 GB of unified memory.
The iMac is still holding onto the M4. For most people, the chip is more than capable, but considering the age and the price of the iMac today, it’s outdated for a new machine.
Here’s a list of the different Apple silicon available for the Mac Mini, Mac Studio, and iMac.

BenQ
5K 27-inch (MA270S)
MacOS famously doesn’t scale well with 4K resolutions, which is what makes the BenQ MA270S such a great option for the Mac Mini or Mac Studio. It costs $600 less than the Apple Studio Display, and while it lacks features like a built-in webcam or excellent speakers, the BenQ MA270S delivers image quality and compatibility where it counts.

Apple
Studio Display XDR
Most people won’t fully utilize the Studio Display XDR’s capabilities. But it really does achieve levels of HDR that no consumer monitor has ever attempted. Thanks to its startling number of local dimming zones (2,304, to be exact), the Studio Display XDR delivers professional-level HDR that’s on another level—even compared with all the OLED monitors out there.

Mac Mini M4 Hub & Stand
The Mac Mini has decent port selection, but it’s missing two obvious ones: USB-A and an SD card slot. This accessory adds these ports, forward-facing as if they are part of the Mac Mini. It’s a genius stand—perfect for photographers and videographers.

Apple
Magic Trackpad 3
Here’s one product that no one makes quite like Apple. While many people prefer a mouse, I always miss the MacBook’s Magic Trackpad. If you use macOS gestures as much as I do, you’ll get why.

Keychron
K3 Ultra 8K
I don’t mind the standard Apple Magic Keyboard, but if you want a more tactile typing experience, I recommend this Keychron keyboard. Its classy look and use of wood contrast nicely in an all-metal Apple ecosystem, and the typing experience is second to none.

Logitech
MX Master 4
The Logitech MX Master 4 has the perfect combination of ergonomic comfort and precision. The thumb rest offers far more support than the laughably bad Magic Mouse, and the scroll wheel and extra buttons make you feel much more productive.
