While COVID-19 still plagues the United States, much of the rest of the world has dealt with it effectively and responsibly. Therefore, European leagues are open for transfer business, with the window lasting from July 27 to October 5. Memphis Depay headed to Barcelona, per report
Barcelona’s plan to build a La Liga and Champions League contender in what could be Lionel Messi’s final season, if such a thing exists, might be nearing a big step.
De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij reports that Barcelona has agreed to a deal for Lyon forward Memphis Depay. It would make for some brighter news around the Nou Camp, where Messi announced he’s staying earlier this month after a couple weeks of exit drama.
Depay is an aggressive, skilled inverted winger who’s followed up a largely forgettable two-year stint at Manchester United with an outright blossoming at Lyon, where he’s scored 57 in 150 games across all competitions.
Still only 26, Depay is the type of complementary player Messi could benefit from playing alongside, without having the spotlight taken away. Because let’s be real: The spotlight will be on Messi as long as he’s there, even if it hinders a badly needed rebuild.
As long as he’s around, a signing of Depay’s caliber would only help.
